PayPal to Reportedly Support Cryptocurrency Direct Transactions

Online-payments giant PayPal Holdings is looking to explicitly unleash cryptocurrencies onto its client base that reportedly boasts over 320 million people.

According to a report by CoinDesk, three sources have confirmed to the crypto industry publication that PayPal and its affiliated platform Venmo will allow their users to “directly” buy and sell several cryptocurrencies, though which coins they will support are yet to be revealed.

“They are going to have some sort of a built-in wallet functionality so you can store it there,” one source said, adding that he expects the company “would be working with multiple exchanges to source liquidity.”

While PayPal declined to comment on the rumors, another source told CoinDesk that PayPal plans to roll out its crypto offering “in the next three months, maybe sooner.”

PayPal’s recent hiring push supports the claim that it is moving into crypto.

The global payments platform’s job listings, posted on PayPal’s own boards, include a request for a technical lead/cryptocurrency engineer set to join a team in Chennai, India, ZDNet reported.

A successful applicant would become part of PayPal’s “Crypto Engineering Team” in the region, which the company says is “responsible for new initiatives for PayPal global with focus on agility, time to market and innovation.” This includes the development of crypto-related products and features that are suitable for the PayPal platform.

The listing emphasizes the need for someone able to build and maintain Internet applications and services, with a focus on expertise in security, symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, crypto libraries, and software development.

Around the start of 2020, PayPal posted job openings to ramp up its new Blockchain Research Group. PayPal posted eight engineering positions: four in San Jose and four in Singapore.

Following PayPal’s short-lived dalliance with the Facebook-led Libra project last year, the focus now is expanding its own payments expertise, one of the sources added.

In an interview with CoinDesk earlier this year, PayPal Chief Technology Officer Sri Shivananda said the company wanted its own “perspective and view on [blockchain] technology itself to see how it can help us contribute to the concept of creating an open digital payments platform that can serve everyone.”

Shivananda said he was unable to comment on any of PayPal’s specific plans.

“We are a strong believer in the potential of blockchain. The digitization of currency is only a matter of when not if,” Shivananda said.

Ford’s Mustang Mach 1 is back, with even more power

2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 First Look: An Icon Returns

Digging deep into its heritage roots, Ford announced the return of the Mach 1 moniker after a 17-year hiatus with the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 on Tuesday.

The car, a limited special edition based on the current-gen Ford Mustang, isn’t just an appearance package, though that’s included too. No, the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 is packed nose to tail with performance goodies.

Let’s start with the engine. The Mach 1 uses a version of the 5.0-liter, cross-plane crank V8 that’s found in the Mustang GT, but tuned to put out a claimed 480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque like the current Bullitt Mustang.

Beyond that, Ford fitted the new Mach 1 with features found on the high-performance Shelby GT350 and GT500.

And comes standard with the six-speed manual transmission from the Shelby GT350, now with rev matching, although a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is available.

During Car and Driver testing, the manual-only Bullitt launched to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and raced through the quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds at 115 mph. The best part is that manual-equipped Mach 1s come with the same white cue-ball shift knob as the Bullitt—a C/D staff favorite.

The Mach 1’s 5.0-liter V-8 gets some good stuff from the Shelby GT350, too, including its intake manifold, oil-filter adapter, and engine oil cooler.

Additionally, the Mach 1 has the GT350’s front and rear subframe with stiffer bushings. It gets a few things from the 760-hp Shelby GT500 as well, including the rear axle cooling system, rear toe link, and rear diffuser—and there are four new 4.5-inch exhaust tips sticking out the back. Better yet, magnetorheological dampers are standard on the Mach 1.

The Mach 1’s lower front vents are also taken from the Shelby GT350; the driver’s side cools the 5.0-liter engine while the passenger side cools the transmission.

Above that are incandescent park and turn lamps, also stripped from the GT350, and two large intakes are integrated into the grille that cool the engine and transmission oil. Sitting in between the air holes is the pony badge, finished in a low-gloss silver called Magnetic, and Mach 1 badges adorn the front fenders and the rear decklid.

The Mach 1’s body will be decorated with distinctive low-gloss racing stripes and a special Mustang pony badge in the center of the grill.

Ford hasn’t yet announced pricing or said how many of these cars will be produced. Thenew Mach 1 will be available at dealerships in the spring of 2021, Ford said.

Chinese giant that powers Tesla says it has million-mile electric-car battery ready to launch

The Chinese behemoth that makes electric-car batteries for Tesla Inc. and Volkswagen AG developed a power pack that lasts more than a million miles — an industry landmark and a potential boon for automakers trying to sway drivers to their EV models.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. is ready to produce a battery that lasts 16 years and 2 million kilometers (1.24 million miles), Chairman Zeng Yuqun said in an interview at company headquarters in Ningde, southeastern China.

Warranties on batteries currently used in electric cars cover about 150,000 miles or eight years, according to BloombergNEF.

Extending that lifespan is viewed as a key advance because the pack could be reused in a second vehicle.

That would lower the expense of owning an electric vehicle, a positive for an industry that’s seeking to recover sales momentum lost to the coronavirus outbreak and the slumping oil prices that made gas guzzlers more competitive.

“If someone places an order, we are ready to produce,” said Zeng, 52, without disclosing if contracts for the long-distance product have been signed. It would cost about 10% more than the batteries now inside EVs, said Zeng, whose company is the world’s largest maker of the batteries.

The company signed a two-year deal to supply batteries for Tesla’s Model 3 cars in February. Its other clients include BMW, Daimler, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.

The European market for EVs and plug-in hybrids grew by 72% in the first three months of the year compared to the same period in 2019, representing 7% of all delivered new cars, according to research firm Canalys.

By contrast, the pandemic weighed on the wider market, which as a whole saw deliveries down by 26% for the quarter.

The firm said that Catl’s claim was “significant but difficult to verify”.

“It is likely to be used as a differentiator by some car-makers when there is a significant difference from one vehicle to another – dramatically affecting resale value,” said Canalys’s chief automotive analyst Chris Jones.

He added that this and other factors – including the wider availability of charging points and longer driving ranges – should help tempt more motorists to make the switch to an electric car.

Paul Tudor Jones calls bitcoin a ‘great speculation,’ says he has between 1 and 2 percent of his assets in bitcoin

Hedge Fund Pioneer Paul Tudor Jones Says He Holds 1%-2% of Assets in Bitcoin

Macro investor Paul Tudor Jones said that he has “a little over 1%” of his assets in bitcoin during a Monday morning appearance on CNBC.

“Bitcoin, I think it’s great speculation. I’ve got a little over 1% of my assets in bitcoin, maybe it’s almost 2, that seems like the right number,” said the founder and chief investment officer of Tudor Investment Corp. during the interview.

However, Jones also noted that his approach to bitcoin is “conservative.”

“When I think of bitcoin I look at it as one tiny part of the portfolio, it may end up being the best. It may end up being the best performer of all of them, I think it may be. I am very conservative. I am going to keep a tiny percent of my assets in it and that’s it,” Jones said.

Jones shocked the market last week when he struck a bullish tone on bitcoin in an investor letter and said that his Tudor BVI fund had taken steps toward purchasing bitcoin futures. Forbes estimates that Jones has a net worth of $5.1 billion.

“If you take cash, on the other hand, and you think about it from a purchasing power standpoint, if you own cash in the world today, you know your central bank has an avowed goal of depreciating its value 2% per year,” Jones said. “So you have, in essence, a wasting asset in your hands.”

Bitcoin, on the other hand, isn’t subject to the whims of government spending, but is itself risky because it’s only 11 years old, Jones said. He also confirmed that he has a portion of his portfolio invested in gold, a popular inflation hedge, and said he thought the metal could go “substantially higher” if inflation spikes.

“When I think of bitcoin, look at it as one tiny part of a portfolio. It may end up being the best performer of all of them, I kind of think it might be,” he said. “But I’m very conservative. I’m going to keep a tiny percent of my assets in it and that’s it. It has not stood the test of time, for instance, the way gold has.”

Bitcoin investors are betting total users will reach “120 million or 200 million,” Jones told CNBC, with current estimates indicating between 55 and 70 million people own bitcoin.

With society’s continued digitization, the investor said it’s hard to look around and “not to think that the preponderance of evidence at this point in time doesn’t point in that direction.”
